Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - IV
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - IV (WISC-IV) is an intelligence test developed to assess the cognitive abilities of children aged 6 to 16. Its validity and reliability studies for Turkey were completed in 2013.
The WISC-IV consists of 15 subtests (10 core and 5 supplemental) and measures four main cognitive domains: Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed. The total administration time varies between 60 and 120 minutes depending on the child’s age and performance.
The WISC-IV provides valuable information about how a child’s intellectual abilities compare to those of their peers and helps identify children with giftedness. The WISC-IV profile evaluates the child’s overall cognitive functioning, identifies strengths and weaknesses, and assists in developing appropriate support and intervention programs.
The test consists of four main indices.
Verbal Comprehension: Measures vocabulary, reasoning, cause-and-effect relationships, and crystallized intelligence. Each task requires the ability to understand auditory stimuli, access long-term memory, recall verbally encoded information, and express responses verbally.
Perceptual Reasoning: Assesses visual-motor coordination, organization, and visual perception skills. Each task requires abilities related to visual perception and organization, as well as reasoning using non-verbal, visually presented material. Some subtests also evaluate visual-motor coordination and speed, as well as visual-spatial and fluid reasoning.
Working Memory: Measures short-term memory, attention, concentration, and short-term auditory memory. Each task requires selective and sustained attention along with mental manipulation skills.
Processing Speed: Measures the speed of mental processing and fine motor processing speed. Both tasks require efficient production of multiple motor responses involving visual perception and organization, visual scanning, focused control of attention, and sustained effort.
