Speech and Communication Disorders

Among the general causes of speech disorders (Stuttering, Articulation Disorder, Speech Delay), genetic factors can be listed, particularly any problem in the development and functioning of the speech centers, hearing problems, insufficient language stimulation, traumatic experiences or stressful life events, and factors such as premature birth.

STUTTERING: Stuttering is a condition that manifests itself with disorders experienced in the fluency of speech and can negatively affect communication skills, especially in childhood. It may include repetitions, blocks, prolongations of sounds, or other disorders in speech fluency during speaking. It is usually noticed in the early stages of language development, and sometimes it can also appear at later ages. Although the causes of stuttering are not fully known, it is thought that genetic, neurological, emotional, and environmental factors may have an effect. This condition can be temporary for many children and tends to resolve on its own. However, in some cases, stuttering may persist and may require professional help. The main part of the treatment consists of therapy techniques aimed at increasing speech fluency. In this process, the child’s breath control, word production, and fluency skills are developed. This process is carried out by a Speech-Language Therapist (SLT). Stuttering can often lead to self-confidence problems and social anxieties. It is important that families are informed about how they can support the child at home.

ARTICULATION DISORDER (PHONOLOGICAL DISORDER) Phonological disorder refers to the situation where children cannot pronounce words correctly or cannot distinguish sounds. Its symptoms include using another sound instead of a specific sound (for example, using the “w” sound instead of the “r” sound), leaving out certain sounds within words by omitting them, completely neglecting certain sounds in words, and placing certain sounds in the wrong positions within words. This problem can negatively affect children’s communication skills and social interactions. The main part of the treatment is carried out by a Speech-Language Therapist (SLT). In treatment, children learn to recognize and use sounds correctly.

SPEECH DELAY It is typically the situation where language and speech skills are behind compared to peers. Speech delay can affect the child’s communication skills and may cause difficulties in social interactions. Its symptoms include delay in building vocabulary compared to peers, difficulty in forming sentences properly or understanding complex sentences, difficulty in understanding spoken language, not understanding instructions correctly, difficulty in communicating with other children, developing friendship relationships, or participating in games. Many factors such as genetic factors, hearing problems, disorders related to language development, or environmental factors can cause it. Early intervention is important. Speech and language therapists can create a customized treatment plan suitable for the child’s needs.
