What to Consider When Choosing a Therapist for Children and Adolescents?

Finding the right therapist directly influences the success of the treatment. The therapist should have received specialized training in child and adolescent mental health. An adult-oriented therapist may not have sufficient expertise to work with children and adolescents.

In addition to the therapist’s field of expertise, the relationship they establish with the child is also critically important. Research has shown that a positive and appropriate therapeutic relationship built with the child and family, based on empathy and collaboration, has a very powerful effect on treatment outcomes. The therapist should not only form a bond with the child but also establish a suitable and collaborative relationship with the parents.

After the first 2-3 sessions, observe your child’s attitude toward the therapist. It is natural for the child not to want to attend at the beginning; however, consistent refusal should be taken seriously. The therapeutic relationship is the core strength of the treatment.

Experience specific to the child or adolescent’s particular problem is also important. While some therapists may be more experienced in eating disorders, another therapist may have greater expertise in trauma-focused therapy.

It is also important for parents to know which therapeutic approach the therapist uses. Asking questions such as: “What type of therapy do you recommend for our child? How long will the therapy last? How many sessions do you plan to conduct?” will be very helpful in obtaining clear information from the therapist.

Child and adolescent therapy cannot be conducted independently of the parents. The therapist should regularly meet with the parents, provide recommendations regarding the home environment, and share the treatment goals. Families should not hesitate to ask questions throughout this process. A well-qualified and self-confident psychotherapist will be happy to answer these questions.
